Spring-like weather at Pike Lake

This afternoon a friend and I took a leisurely drive out to Pike Lake and picked up 14 bird species and 2 mammals.
The weather was fantastic with hardly any wind, and clear blue skies. It was good to see so many Robins present that have successfully overwintered.

Here's the cast in no particular order , followed by some photos:

American Robin - 30+
Pine Grosbeak - 4
Blue Jay - 2
Horned Lark - 1 ( new for the year )
Snow Bunting - 125
Bohemian Waxwing - 80+
Downy Woodpecker - 2
Common Raven - 12
Black-billed Magpie - 9
Black-capped Chickadee - 14
White-breasted Nuthatch - 4
Northern Flicker - 1
Common Redpoll - 3
Rock Pigeon - 4

Red Squirrel - 3
Snowshoe Hare - 1

It's ten below zero this morning but it's suppose to be warmer this weekend so maybe your spring like weather is coming our way. Wonderful photos as usual, great use of the fill flash on the rabbit picture.

Love these! Especially the hare!

O.K., so I have a question for you Nick. I see that you use the Canon 100-400mm lens. Do you have a problem with the autofocus in the cold? I have been and know it's the lens and not the camera, as I switched out bodies and had the same issue. Since you have much colder weather, I thought if it's a cold issue, you'd have it too. I've seen nothing on the net about it.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Very nice photographs. Glad you are having some good weather.

Thanks guys. Hannibal, to answer your question, this lens does tend to ' hunt' in cold conditions, but mainly when the light is poor.
Its still the ideal ' walk around ' lens though, as I have managed shots with shutterspeeds of 1/60 handheld and never carry a tripod with me.

The snowshoe hare looks great against those snow shadows! And there's always something so endearing about seeing a squirrel eat a nut!

Wow. These are amazing. I don't even think I can pick a favorite. Okay, maybe the bunny and all of that white on white. :-)

Some great shots Nick.
It's always good to see different birds. Maybe I might get to see some as 'rareties' over here lol

Thanks for commenting guys. Hey , ya never know, just ask Bill Oddie how many Canadian birds have shown up in the UK, and he'll tell you quite a lot ! :-)
