Wonderful photo. I love all of the magnificent detail you can see on the WP (especially when you enlarge the photo). Your photo really helps to show how much larger the hairy's beak is compared to the downy's
Thanks Kallen. After awhile its pretty easy to tell the two apart. Learning their slightly different pitched call helps too , especially if the bird is a good distance away :-)

You really captured his bill in that profile well. We had a shortage of the Hairy Woodpeckers on this years Christmas count.
Beautiful capture! We have a lot of downies, but not too many Hairy Woodpeckers. I'd love to see one show up in my yard some day!
