I went for a long hike along the river this morning, even though the wind was blowing up to 45k and it was cloudy a lot of the time threatening to rain and blow in a storm.
A nice thing to see was a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches excavating a nest hole which I'd not seen before.
I also found the Lesser Black-backed Gull again from the east side of the river.
Two new year birds seen today were:
Sandhill Crane - 14 flying noisily over the river
Common Grackle - 12
I took a few photos of which I will post more over the next few days.
Here is a Black-billed Magpie I found on the way home.

He was surprisingly calm. His mate was nearby collecting twigs for a nest :-)
Gosh Nick,
What a beautiful photo of one of my favourite birds. Smashing.
Thanks Clare. Its probably my favourite photo of one I've taken yet.
...such a beautiful bird and a gorgeous color. I love the colors. I've never seen one... My son, Matty, is sitting here reading this with me, and he loves this bird too and photo too!
Thanks Kelly :-)
Hi Nick,
A very nice photo of a bird that we do not see that often on picture gallery or blog, probably because it is so common that people do not take pictures of them... Your shot is very nice.
Good shot Nick, caught that gorgeous sheen of the feathers.
He's magnificent!
Glad you like him guys.
Magpie is a very much maligned species over here, but how could you not appreciate the colours.
Well captured Nick.
Hi there, I am not sure where to post this...
Today I was at Wascana Lake in Regina, and I saw a bird in the water. I wonder if you know its name. It was a small bird, about 1/2 to 3/4 the size of a duck, swimming in the water. It had a red eye, and whitish-yellowy fuzzy tufts poking up on either side of its head, that looked like ears. The rest of the head was browny-black. Its back was black, but there was a stripe (more like a braid) of red down the length of its body on each wing. It is a diving bird. It was diving down, and coming up with little fish in its mouth, or long things anyway. It could stay under about a minute, before coming up, usually a little downstream from where it went down. Any idea what it could be? Please let me know at rachelmacd777@hotmail.com Thank you and happy Spring! Rachel
Rachel , your bird sounds like a Horned Grebe. I will also email you.
This is a beautiful bird photo. I like it a lot.
Neat and clean shot Nick
This is one of your images that must be viewed full size! The detail is fantastic! Love the colors on this bird!
