A nice thing to see was a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches excavating a nest hole which I'd not seen before.
I also found the Lesser Black-backed Gull again from the east side of the river.
Two new year birds seen today were:
Sandhill Crane - 14 flying noisily over the river
Common Grackle - 12
I took a few photos of which I will post more over the next few days.
Here is a Black-billed Magpie I found on the way home.

He was surprisingly calm. His mate was nearby collecting twigs for a nest :-)

Hi there, I am not sure where to post this...
Today I was at Wascana Lake in Regina, and I saw a bird in the water. I wonder if you know its name. It was a small bird, about 1/2 to 3/4 the size of a duck, swimming in the water. It had a red eye, and whitish-yellowy fuzzy tufts poking up on either side of its head, that looked like ears. The rest of the head was browny-black. Its back was black, but there was a stripe (more like a braid) of red down the length of its body on each wing. It is a diving bird. It was diving down, and coming up with little fish in its mouth, or long things anyway. It could stay under about a minute, before coming up, usually a little downstream from where it went down.
