Yesterday afternoon I received several phone calls and emails from friends with the news that a male Scarlet Tanager was visiting the backyard of a couple of bird watchers here in Saskatoon.
Of course, I had to be there and thanks to the kind hospitality of the house owners and the friends I went with, I got great views of this life bird through the main dining room window.
This is only the 7th record for the Saskatoon area in 50 years.
What an absolute treat ! I have only waited 7 years to see one :-)

I can see how he got his name Nick!
What a stunner, and congratulations on getting such beautiful shots.
Good of the houseowner to allow you all to observe such a beauty too.

...on our river trail we only get to see them from a distance. This up-close view is phenomenal. In 1990 I was with my grandma and one few within three feet of us at eye level. I've never been that close to one since. Super photos...lucky you!!!
What a darling! That's a great photo, Nick. He looks puffed up a bit -- is it cold for him there? His colors are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks guys. Yesterday was cold yes, and also windy !
Tomorrow I hope to get some Shorebird photos before they vanish :-)
Beautiful - we saw onetoday, too, but he was REALLY faraway!

Beautiful bird Nick !,congrats,I think you need to send some of those nice Saskatoon birds down our way:-)
How wonderful to get to see him perched at a feeder!! WOW!! Great shots..I have seen him two times this spring but never at a feeder and always on the move. You lucky guy!
Oh, he's delicious Nick!!
Congrats! Even thru a window, you got some excellent images!
Thanks everyone. He didn't actually come to a feeder.
There is a huge apple tree in the garden, so he was interested in those I think.
He came right down to eye level to stop at the bird bath, and at one point landed right on the dining room window ledge :-)
I have a couple more photos I will post some time.
So BEAUTIFUL!!! Easily ranked up there as one of the most beautiful birds ever! (Behind my loons of course, ha,ha!)
Wow! - I heard one singing today, but in spite of long search, never saw him in the canopy except for a shadow flying.
First visit to your blog , very nice photos!!
